Watch our interview with Dr. Rolf Peters
At Rittergut Bockerode we speak with potato expert Dr. Rolf Peters (DocPotato) and discuss what's new in plant breeding and technology, what's moving the industry? Keywords are resistance to climate change, resistance to pests, low input varieties and varieties with higher nutrient resistance.
PotatoEurope 2022 Special focused on direct marketing
PotatoEurope 2022's special feature ‘On-Farm Processing and Marketing’ will be covering essential know-how for selling produce directly from the farm: storage, cleaning, packaging, further processing and marketing. Innovative ideas for selling and marketing the farm’s own potatoes will be presented along with tips on branding and advertising.
The 2022 special feature has already attracted numerous companies ready to present their farm solutions, from sorting and cleaning technology, packaging and processing technology to vending machines and online sales platforms.
In the management of potato crops on conventional farms, the current focus is on the optimal application of herbicides in the pre-emergence stage. With the combination of laying and final ridge construction in one operation, the ridges can settle very well over a longer period of time. At the same time, similar to the creation of a "false seedbed", a large proportion of the weeds run up from the upper soil layer, which can then be easily controlled shortly before the potato plants push through. With today's crop protection sprayers and the widespread use of furrows, high area performance is ensured for on-time treatment and quality-preserving use of only selected furrows.
For potato growers exploring #catchcrops and greening between harvests and the planting, the special feature at #PotatoEurope2022 "#Intercropping and greening of furrow dikes in potato production” will present suitable intercrop strategies.
Update from Rittergut Bockerode
In the last weeks before the fair, the exhibition grounds are mowed regularly so that a firm sward is established by September.
Will it be suitable to play golf? Come take a look for yourself on September 7-8! 😉
The potatoes have started very well this year with 12 tubers. There is a clear lack of rainfall in our region, so we assume that the potatoes will not reach the desired grade of >40mm. Due to the past hot days in combination with the severe drought, the potatoes have taken a break in growth. This could possibly have a negative effect on the quality of the potatoes when they start to grow again (for example through cracking and symptoms of secondary growth).
